Description
Come celebrate the latest edition of Vin et Rigottes en fête! Each year, two appellations are honored: AOC Condrieu and AOC Rigotte de Condrieu.
Every May 1, the town celebrates its two Protected Designations of Origin (Condrieu wine and Rigotte de Condrieu cheese). This is a very popular event, during which local winegrowers and goat farmers showcase their products. A friendly, family-oriented event, the Wine and Rigotte Festival is hugely popular with the local and regional population.
Condrieu and Valencay are the only two towns in France to have two protected designations of origin bearing their names.
Condrieu wines have enjoyed a reputation for excellence for generations, and were enjoyed by the popes of Avignon. It was awarded its Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) status in 1940. The region's oldest market existed until 1950, when it disappeared due to a lack of winegrowers. Tribute is paid to Georges Vernay, whose visionary abilities enabled him to replant the slopes of Vernon and encourage other winegrowers to do the same, gradually restoring the appellation to its former glory.
Rigotte de Condrieu, recognized as an AOC in 2009, was registered as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) by the European Commission on November 7, 2013. Obtaining PDO status marks the official entry of Rigotte de Condrieu into the PDO dairy cheese category.
Since 1987, Condrieu wine and Rigotte have been celebrated on May 1 during the “Vin et Rigotte en fête” festival.
In addition, Rigotte and Vin de Condrieu have worked in collaboration with Pomme du Pilat to jointly promote the identity of their products and their values. These three professional organizations, in partnership with leading local chefs, produced a gourmet recipe book in December 2013: “Symphony of Three Flavors: Vin de Condrieu, Pomme du Pilat, and Rigotte de Condrieu.”
