The Hermitage Appellation

An Iconic Hill of the Northern Rhône Valley Destination

Hermitage is one of the most renowned grand crus in the world. With only 130 hectares of vineyards spread over three communes — Tain l’Hermitage, Larnage, and Crozes-Hermitage — this appellation produces wines of rare intensity, marked by power, complexity, and finesse.

A Legendary Hill at the Heart of the Vineyard

More than just a vineyard, Hermitage is a symbol. Its hill, classified as a national heritage site since 1913, overlooks the Rhône River, sculpted with terraced vineyards that change their appearance with the seasons. At its summit, the Saint-Christophe chapel, built in the 13th century, watches over the vines and travelers.

According to legend, it was Gaspard de Stérimberg, a former Crusader knight, who chose to live as a hermit on this hill, thus giving rise to the name "Hermitage" — or "Ermitage," both spellings being accepted.

Today, this iconic chapel belongs to Maison Paul Jaboulet, whose "La Chapelle" cuvée has become one of the great names in French wine, notably for exceptional vintages such as 1961.

A Geological Exception, Shaped by the Rhône

From the top of the hill, the Rhône reveals a vast meander. This landscape, shaped by the river millennia ago, offers a granitic soil similar to that found across the river in the Saint-Joseph appellation. The Rhône thus left a piece of Ardèche in the Drôme, creating a unique terroir — the result of an alchemy between geology, climate, and exposure.

Add to this native grape varieties — Syrah, Marsanne, and Roussanne — and a know-how passed down through generations, and you have one of the most admired crus in the world.

Syrah in All Its Majesty

Hermitage red is one of the greatest expressions of Syrah. A classic aging wine (up to 30 years for the best vintages), it enchants with its ruby color in youth, which gradually develops tawny hues over time. On the palate, it is fleshy, structured, and progressively reveals aromas of black fruits, spices, leather, and violet.

The appellation also produces white wines, made from Marsanne and Roussanne. Their aging potential is about 10 years, but their aromatic palette unfolds over time, with notes of iris, linden blossom, and a harmony that surprises the most refined palates.

“Tawny hues”: orangey reflections that red wine takes on as it ages.

A Rare and Coveted Grand Cru

This exceptional wine, often considered a hidden gem, captivates connoisseurs with its rarity and precise expression. The Hermitage AOC fully justifies its reputation: top-tier cuvées, an outstanding terroir, and an unmistakable style.
