The Saint-Joseph Appellation

Perched high in the Northern Rhône Valley, overlooking the Rhône River, the Saint-Joseph AOC stands as one of the region’s great crus. Known for its elegant reds and aromatic whites, this appellation is deeply rooted in the history and spectacular landscapes of Ardèche Hermitage.

A Historical Cradle of the Northern Rhône Valley

The history of Saint-Joseph dates back to the 8th century. At the time, it was known as “vin de Mauves,” highly prized by the kings of France, notably Charlemagne, and later mentioned by Victor Hugo in Les Misérables. This wine, born between Tournon and Mauves, originated on the lands of the Collège de Tournon*, now Lycée Gabriel Faure, founded by Cardinal François de Tournon.

The appellation was officially recognized in 1956, initially covering six communes in Ardèche. In 1969, it expanded to 26 communes spread between Ardèche and Loire, on the right bank of the Rhône, stretching nearly 60 kilometers from Guilherand-Granges to Chavanay. Today, it covers 1,200 hectares of vineyards planted on granite slopes shaped by human hands.

Vertiginous Terraces, a Heritage Craftsmanship

The vineyards of Saint-Joseph are planted on terraces suspended above the Rhône. These chaleys (or chalets), built from dry stone, form a unique heritage site, listed by UNESCO since 2018. These hand-built walls stabilize the slopes, promote vine cultivation, retain water, and store heat for optimal grape ripening.

This ancestral craftsmanship shapes the soul of the appellation, combined with the climate, geology, grape varieties, and, of course, the passion of the winemakers.

Syrah, Roussanne, and Marsanne: A Unique Signature

Saint-Joseph is above all a great red wine made from Syrah, the emblematic grape of the Rhône Valley, representing about 90% of local production. The reds are full-bodied, with firm tannins, notes of pepper, violet, and a lovely minerality.

The white wines, made from Roussanne and Marsanne, offer floral aromas (hawthorn) and fruity scents (apricot, yellow-fleshed fruits). They charm with their freshness and roundness on the palate.
