The Côte Rôtie Appellation
Côte-Rôtie is one of the oldest and most prestigious appellations in the Northern Rhône Valley. Established by the Allobroges and terraced by the Romans, this legendary vineyard—recognized as an AOC since 1940—today embodies the nobility of Syrah combined with the elegance of Viognier.
A Vineyard Hand-Carved Between Sky and Rhône
Located on the steep slopes of the right bank of the Rhône, south of Vienne, the Côte-Rôtie vineyard covers just over 300 hectares, between the communes of Ampuis, Tupin-et-Semons, and Saint-Cyr-sur-le-Rhône. With slopes that can exceed 60%, each parcel is worked by hand, respecting tradition.
The vineyard landscape is spectacular, shaped into terraces supported by dry-stone walls. Two emblematic zones stand out:
- La Côte Blonde, with its light, granitic soils, produces supple, fine, and elegant wines.
- La Côte Brune, more clayey and rich in iron oxides, yields powerful, deep wines built for aging.
Syrah, Queen of Reds, Enhanced by Viognier
The wines of the appellation are made predominantly from Syrah, the region’s emblematic grape variety. The Côte-Rôtie AOC permits blending with up to 20% Viognier, a white grape that adds floral notes and a unique delicacy to the reds.
In the glass, the color is deep, with an intense ruby hue. The nose reveals a complex bouquet: dark fruits, spices, violet, leather… On the palate, these wines combine structure, fine tannins, and rich aromatics. They can be enjoyed young but reach their full expression with age, developing more opulent and complex notes.
